Church Dogmatics I/1 (1932) and I/2 (1938) form the basis for Barth’s mature doctrine of the Word of God. The argument is cumulative rather than linear, and although elaborate in detail and rhetorically sophisticated (and forceful), its general thrust is fairly straightforward. God, for Barth, is ever active; God has chosen to reveal himself in the Word, and it is only through the Word that God can be known. Dogmatics, for Barth, occurs within the Church.
